There will be SHORT-TERM parking available next to the Campus Center for registration. From Elm Street, turn onto College Lane, take the second left into the parking lot. Limited on-street parking may also be available on Elm Street (Route 9).
Parking permits for Smith will be issued at registration or sent to you via email with your final confirmation letter the week before NEWS.
Day trippers and others without permits, please use on-street parking on Elm Street or elsewhere or risk getting a ticket.
There is no assigned parking - first come, first served in white lined spaces ONLY. Parking in green-lined spaces will result in a ticket. There is limited parking near the dorms. It is strongly suggested that you use the Smith Parking Garage for overnight or all-day parking. Parking regulations are STRICTLY ENFORCED by both Smith and the city of Northampton. NEWS will be charged for any outstanding fines issued by Smith.
Handicapped parking spaces are available throughout the campus and the city. Individuals with state-issued disability plates or placards may use these spaces.
Check-out time on Sunday is noon.
Keys/swipe cards will be issued to each resident and must be returned at the end of the conference. They may be returned to the registration desk, the dining hall, or the residence halls; boxes to drop off keys and cards will be stationed at all these locations. There will be a $24.00 charge for each key/swipe card not returned within 24 hours of check out. Lost or unreturned charge is $120 per key.
Upon departure, please strip your bed and leave your linens in the room.
All meals will be served cafeteria style in the dining room in Tyler House. In order to be allowed into the dining room, participants must provide their ID card, which will have been programmed for the meal plan that they purchased, and must be swiped for each meal. Note that the ID cards must be returned at the end of the conference. There is a $24 charge for each ID card not returned within 24 hours of checkout.

Dinner 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Thursday night dinner is Greek-themed Welcome Dinner (pre-purchase necessary) from 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm.
If you did not purchase a meal plan, or if you are arriving on Tuesday or Wednesday, the Campus Center Cafe will be open 7:30 am - 2:30 pm, Tuesday - Saturday. The cafe serves breakfast, lunch, coffee, and snacks.
Computer Usage and Wifi
Wireless internet access points are available in most locations across campus, including residence halls. To connect a wireless computer or other mobile device for the first time, see the Resource Guide in your registration packet for the network name and password. All rooms have data jacks; bring an ethernet cable as back-up.
All registration throughout the conference will take place in the Main Lounge of the Campus Center. The area will include a bulletin board for updated information about the conference.
All floor and table looms, sewing machines, other equipment can be taken directly to their respective classrooms and remain there until participants depart.
Seelye Hall will be open from 7 AM Wednesday to Sunday at 4 PM. Buildings close at 6 PM every day. Student helpers will be available on Wednesday 4:30–5:30 PM and Thursday 7:30-8:30 AM. Seelye’s elevator is located in the SW corner of the building.
Access to Seelye is via the Green Street lot (go to the right-hand side and as far in as possible; a pathway leads to Seelye); another drive off Green Street will access an off-loading space directly behind Seelye. Cars cannot stay there – bring in your equipment and move your car to a parking space promptly.
Hillyer Hall (Fine Arts Center) will be open from 8 AM Wednesday to Sunday at 4 PM. Buildings close at 6 PM every day. Student helpers will be available on Thursday 4:30–5:30 PM and Friday 7:30-8:30 AM. Hillyer’s elevator is in the SW side of the short arm of the building (there is a ramp).
Closest car access is on the campus drive off Elm Street (NOTE: Elm Street becomes one-way after Hillyer and you cannot enter). Cars cannot stay on the campus drive – bring in your equipment and move your car to a parking space promptly. Green Street lot is the closest parking area.
The Smith College Campus is a walking campus. There is handicapped parking available near the 'Quad', which is close to the buildings where most classes will be held. There is also handicapped parking available at the special needs dorm. If you require handicapped parking, you will need to have your handicapped sticker available at registration. You may want to consider bring a rolling cart to transport items to and from classes.
Looking for a place to hang out, to meet with your friends, to relax between classes? There will be a lounge area in the Campus Center TV Lounge - food and drink allowed.
The Ballroom is open 12:30 pm - 5:00 pm on Thursday, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm Friday and Saturday, and 8:30 am - 11:30 am on Sunday.
As the Neilson Library is under construction, the Guild Table Exhibit and the Sample Library are now located in Seelye Hall, Room 301.
Lectures, shows, and workshops will be held in air-conditioned spaces on campus. You are encouraged to bring a sweater if you are inclined to be cold.
NEWS and NEWS 2021 Trustees do not carry insurance on persons at or property brought to the conference. If insurance is desired, the individual must provide it.
Smoking and alcohol are PROHIBITED in all Smith College buildings.
The Smith campus is immediately adjacent to a charming downtown area, loaded with restaurants and shops. This page on the WEBS website has a good list of area attractions, shopping, and restaurants:
Any emergency, including fire, should be reported to the Campus Police at 413-585-2490. For emergency care, you can go to Cooley-Dickinson Hospital, 39 Locust Street, 1.5 miles from campus, west on Rte. 9. If you need an ambulance, call the Campus Police 24/7.
From Bradley International Airport and points South:
I-91 North to Exit 18. At the end of the exit ramp, turn left onto Route 5. Continue into the center of town. Turn left onto Route 9. Go straight through four traffic lights, turning left into Smith's main entrance (College Lane) shortly after the fourth set of lights.
From the North:
I-91 South to Exit 20, and follow onto Route 5 south into the center of town. At the intersection of Route 5 and Route 9 (Main Street), turn right onto Route 9 and follow the directions above.
From the East or West via the Massachusetts Turnpike:
Take Mass Pike to I-91 North (exit 4). Once on I-91, follow the directions above.
