Have you always wanted to try needle lace but didn't know where to start? In this introductory class you will make a simple design that uses 2-3 different needle lace stitches to learn the basic techniques of needle lace. From this introduction you can use your new skills for contemporary work of your own design or explore older traditions. Your finished class piece can adorn a garment, hat, bag, or other item. All you need to bring is threads, needles, and a few basic tools and the rest of the materials will be supplied. Give it a try!
J1: Needle Lace Fundamentals
Threads: Lizbeth size 40 tatting cotton or equivalent. 1-3 light to medium colors; Sewing thread, any color (this will be removed from the finished lace).
Needles: Tapestry #24 (large eye, blunt tip); Sharp sewing needle #8 or 9.
Miscellaneous Supplies: small sharp scissors for thread; scissors for cutting paper; needle vice+needle (or a ball-head pin like a corsage pin); tweezers or forceps; portable light; magnifier if needed; thimble.
Preparation: A few weeks before class, start to grow out your thumb nails so that they extend a short distance past the tip of the thumb. Just before class, make sure your nail edges are smooth. I will have some nail files in class for last minute-snags.
