The Shakers wove tapes, poplar cloth, and fabric until they could buy the same that met their exacting standards. While most Shaker weaving is indistinguishable from what others wove, there are a few uniquely Shaker twists. The class will focus on some of the weaving found at the Sabbathday Lake, Maine Shaker community as well as the press for “permanent press” fabric and other unique items. The second part of the class is a hands-on demonstration of chair listing (taping) using handwoven or commercial tape.
